Go to wikipedia, search for Newton's law of universal gravitation.

Then look up the planet radia and masses and do the calculations for maximal and minimal distance of various planets.

Now do the calculation for the Earth and the Sun.

Now do the calculation for the Earth and a Football at N.N.

Now do the calculation for an avarage human on Earth and Alpha Centauri A.

Now you have some basic idea about how planet constelations mean jack shit and why you can't get a Masters Degree in Astrology at any respectable learning institution.

the planet alignment is ALL of them. The ones we are waiting for are the far outer planets that wont be here until 2012......the inner ones move fast enough (mercury is like what one month for a go around the sun?)
And then we arent in the right position yet either.......its kinda like getting 10 kids to all sit down at dinner at the same time...each has different schedules...the younger kids (the ones not in school) are easy...its the college kids that you wait for.
For a few days in 2012 the alignment will be there....and the college kids will be home for a while, but the infant can only be there for a short time (mercury)....

(and the mayan calendar is wrong----some mayan big wig guy said that it had been misinterpreted since when the europeans came they slew all the literate people and all that was left were the peasants...who just tried to figure it out, and probably, likely, misread it....but the end of the mayan calendar should be close------though in all honesty, its not the end of the world, just a big change that the mayans wouldnt be around to see).

your assumption that the 'big thing' that is happening 12/21/12 is purely because of a planetary alignment is probably faulty.

Some of us, myself included, listen to Coast to Coast AM, and there have been MANY theories about what it might be that will trigger the big change. Only one of them is a special alignment, similarly I've heard it's when the planet passes the galactic plane (which would be more of a galactic alignment), the coming of the Age of Aquarius, as well as many, many theories that have nothing to do with alignments (among these, a huge coronal mass ejection, first contact, a sudden magnetic pole shift, sudden climate change, huge meteor impact, the coming of Planet X, biblical prophecy, Hopi prophecy, etc etc)

Yeah, it's not a true planetary alignment. It's actually a galactic alignment where, at around 11:11 universal time, there will be a precise alignment of our Sun with the Galactic center (at the Galactic Equator).

1 ~ The Maya calendars have been and are the most accurate of any known. Even ours today has to account for a missing day by adding in a leap year day.
2 ~ The literate people weren't slain. The written word was destroyed (well, all but the hieroglyphics we can see today).
3 ~ You mean the estimated 7 million Maya living in Mexico and Central America now won't be around in 2 years?

MMS, I don't think anyone here actually believes that on 12/21/12 that the world or civilization will literally end. It's an interesting fable that's been in the oven for some 3000 years and it's finally about to be that date. Most people are interested in fables, legends, and consipiracies, nothing more nothing less. It makes for interesting conversation, and forums are a great place for that. What is more revealing are those who go out of their way to wig out on people who like to idly banter about it, taking themselves way more seriously than this lighthearted supposition.
